Steve Merced (left) and Keith Ott (right) are shown thanking U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop for taking time out of his busy schedule to learn more about the expanded services that Eastern Portable X-Ray has been providing to Suffolk County residents.

Eastern Portable X-Ray provides comprehensive radiology, cardiology and ultrasound services. They work with nursing homes, adult homes, assisted living facilities and correctional facilities as well as in patients’ homes. They serve clients in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.

Eastern Portable X-Ray will come to you when you need to have an X-ray. This means that you do not have to leave your home or office. You don’t have to travel. You don’t have to wait for a doctor to see you or wait for days for your results. Eastern Portable X-Ray has portable digital machines that take your X-ray in minutes and the results are sent to your doctor that day.

“They are unbelievably accurate,” said Merced, owner of Eastern Portable X-Ray. “One of our doctors saw a break in a patient’s arm and the patient’s doctor said it was not there. I went to the doctor’s office myself and showed him where it was on the X-ray. Our images are that detailed.”

Eastern Portable X-Ray provides timely reporting and reviews of X-rays. There are no retakes because technicians see the image while they are there with you. Eastern Portable X-Ray uses state of the art digital technology, the same equipment you would see in a hospital, except it’s in a portable version. Eastern Portable X-Ray gets to you quickly so you can get your results quickly.

Eastern Portable X-Ray’s service is convenient, fast and accurate. Their technicians are licensed and registered. They work with local board certified physicians for interpretations of all exams and type-written reports are sent out the same day as your examination.

“House calls are coming back,” said Merced. “We go to you, and we show your results to the people who need to see them. Anyone you authorize can view your results online, at our HIPAA-compliant website, as long as they have a user name, password and an internet connection.”

Eastern Portable X-Ray offers the following digital services:

  • Radiology: chest, abdominal, spinal, extremities, head and ribs
  • Cardiology: EKG, pacemaker checks, halter monitoring, event monitoring, transtelephonic halter and event monitoring
  • Ultrasound: general, vascular and echocardiograms

Eastern Portable X-Ray is open seven days a week. They are even open on holidays. They offer one-hour results for emergencies, and results in four hours or less for regular exams. “As long as your insurance covers it, we are there,” said Merced. Eastern Portable X-Ray accepts Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. They will handle authorizations too, if necessary. Merced continued, “Call us and we are on our way.”

Before owning Eastern Portable X-Ray, Merced worked for a portable X-ray company. He also did X-rays for major hospitals on Long Island and in New York City. Merced started Eastern Portable X-Ray out of his home before his son was born. He met up with a doctor who did house calls and got referrals from him. Then, another doctor found out about him and he got more referrals. He began to see patients in homebound settings. Then, more doctors found out about him and his business grew. Merced expanded into a medical facility and also outgrew that. He is presently located in Bohemia.

Merced loves what he does for a living. He also believes in family. He will be married for 25 years in September to Maria. Maria was an X-ray technician when they met in college. She currently works at Eastern Portable X-Ray and is responsible for quality control assurance and performance improvements. Merced has three children: Steven, 27, who owns a used car dealership in Queens; Lauren, 21, who works with disabled children; and David, 16, who is in high school. Steven and Maria live in Holbrook.

“I want Eastern Portable X-Ray to be the best, and the comments we hear from our customers shows me that we are reaching that goal. Every time we go to someone’s home they are thrilled that we came to them; they just can’t believe it. They are so grateful that X-rays can be done in the home.”

Deep Vein Thrombosis: What You Should Know

What is deep vein thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis (also called DVT) is a blood clot in a vein deep inside your body. These clots usually occur in your leg veins. While DVT is a fairly common condition, it is also a dangerous one. If the blood clot breaks away and travels through your bloodstream, it could block a blood vessel in your lungs. This blockage (called a pulmonary embolism) can be fatal.
